Creative and Inspiring Curriculum for Young Musicians in Sheffield

Ways to encourage students to improvise, compose and understand how music works.

This afternoon workshop with composers/piano teachers Heather Hammond and Lindsey Berwin will focus largely on jazz, pop and contemporary styles. Come along to discover new and exciting ways to inspire creativity in your pupils. 

Topics will include First Composition steps, Using the Blues, Working with modes and Cool bass lines, Composition Tactics using the Cycle of Fifths and Four Chord Pop songs.   

Heather is author of many books for young instrumentalists - Cool Piano, Funky Flute, Cool Clarinet, Super Sax, joint author of Get Set! Piano & The Intermediate Pianist series. All the major UK examination boards have included Heather's pieces in their examination syllabuses. She has a busy teaching practice in York and also teaches at Scarcroft School.

Lindsey Berwin is author of the FunKey! series (Kevin Mayhew Publishers) and All The Fun Of The Fair (EVC Music Publications). She has been teaching piano and performing in Leeds for over 30 years. She teaches piano at the Wakefield Grammar School foundation and has become well known for her innovative approaches to improving key skills whilst maintaining enjoyment for her students. Lindsey is a busy composer herself and encourages her pupils to compose. She and her students regularly win prizes in the annual European Piano Teachers Composers' Competition!
