About Me

Ruth is a classically trained concert pianist and a freelance orchestral musician & she has performed in concert halls all over the world. She is still primarily a freelance performer but also teaches piano, singing, wind and string instruments part time from teaching studios across Lincolnshire (Guildhall Arts Centre in Grantham & private studios in Ancaster near Sleaford.) She also runs string ensembles, master classes and trains local music teachers and aspiring performers up to professional diploma/degree level.

Ruth started her training as a concert pianist at aged 9 after winning a place at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama Junior Conservatoire department. Soon after starting at RWCMD she was also accepted for training as an orchestral player on flute and violin, with members of the BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra. Throughout her childhood, she regularly performed for BBC Cymru and Radio BBC3 as a pianist, singer & instrumentalist.

At aged 11 she was offered places at the Purcell and Chethams Schools of Music, then passed grades 7&/8 ABSRM with distinction. She also passed both LTCL & LRAM diplomas prior to leaving school at 17.

At 17 she won a scholarship to train as a full time music student at Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London where she studied flute, violin, piano, composition, conducting & singing full time with members of the LSO gaining a distinction in performance. In her second year of college, she was offered part time teaching at Harrow & occasional orchestral gigs with the LSO. Following graduation (after 4 years of study) she worked as a professional pianist & orchestral & chamber music player, performing with the BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra, LSO and several other major UK orchestras & freelancing in West End shows, musicals, folk bands and chamber music groups across Europe.

Ruth has studied with many eminent musicians: Mary Rees, Douglas Townshend, Peter Katin, Edward Beckett, Jean Pierre Rampal, Roger Armstrong, Mary Rees, Tracey Chadwell, Francis Howard & demonstrated in masterclasses & workshops all over the world for James Galway, Yehudi Menuhin, Simon Rattle, Trevor Wye, Murray Perahia and many others.

She holds several postgraduate awards & has worked in research, music and sound therapy settings, managed school inspections, music examinations (LCM & Guildhall) and school improvement services for many different institutions including OfSTED, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children and the Scottish Executive.

She has over 35 years of music teaching experience -as a Head of Music at a Steiner School, as a consultant for local authority music departments, & taught piano, wind and string instruments at Harrow, the Harpur Schools Bedford, Sherborne School for Girls,(where she was hired to teach a famous celebrity and a Saudi princess!), Simon Langton Girls and Boys Grammar Schools in Canterbury & Kent College Senior & Junior Schools.

Many of Ruth's private students aspire to become professional musicians. However she also enjoys teaching pupils who want to learn just for fun and relaxation and she teaches all ages and standards  as well as all styles (not just classical – rock pop and folk too!).
