About Me
I have been teaching Piano for over 50 years. I very much tailor my teaching, whether to those aged eight or 80, to the requirements of each individual as all pupils, whether children or adults, have different reasons for learning and different anticipated outcomes. In particular, this means that I have a most flexible approach, particularly to the taking of exams.
My pupils have gained results in Grade exams 1-8 which are well above the national average. Over the last ten years 90% of my candidates have gained a Merit or Distinction. I have also taught Jazz Piano since this syllabus was introduced in 1998.
All of my Theory teaching is online. I have written a Grade 5 course and also teach the subject at Grade 8 level. Beyond that, I offer lessons in Analysis, Composing, Essay Skills, Harmony and Counterpoint up to Oxbridge entrance level. In 2021 I tutored a pupil, exclusively, who gained a place at Keble College, Oxford.
My qualifications are GBSM, LRAM (Piano Teaching), ARCM (Musicianship & Theory) and my musical experiences are wide-ranging. I spent 38 years enjoying the classroom, including over 31 as Director of Music at Easingwold School. I have directed 12 adult groups, this experience including almost 11 years as Chorusmaster of Harrogate Operatic Players. I also work as an accompanist for soloists and various types of ensemble and spent about 25 years as an adjudicator. All of these experiences benefit each and every pupil in many different ways.
