Teacher Profile
About Me
I have been teaching Suzuki piano since 1982. I qualified at level 5 in 1983, the first to do so under the European Suzuki Association training system. In 1984 I traveled to Japan for three months to study with Dr. Suzuki and (co-founder of the piano school) Mrs Kataoka. I returned in 1987 and 1990 for further study. I have been a teacher trainer for the Suzuki Method since 1994 and have served as director of teacher training for the UK, and the Spanish Suzuki National Associations. Today, I run a unique teacher training course based at our teaching practice ‘Cambridge Suzuki Young Musicians’ with the support of Betty Power (who is a graduate of Dr. Suzuki school having spent three years studying in Japan at a postgraduate level), that leads to qualification for candidates in the Suzuki Approach (approved by the ESA), and, also, in a more expanded form, at our long running annual Summer School. I am passionate about New Music in education, and have been instrumental in commissioning works for two and four pianos from Martin Butler, Charlotte Bray, Regis Campo, Gary Carpenter, Philip Cashian, Graham Fitkin, Michael Zev Gordon, Colin Matthews, Tarik O’Regan, & Rachel Stott so that students can discover the music of their own time, and enjoy playing together. I have made a study of the contemporary chamber music repertoire suitable for intermediate and advanced level students, and have taught the music of Kurtag, especially his ‘Games’.
