On Saturday 2 March 2024, Solihull School, in conjunction with EPTA UK, will be hosting a day celebrating piano duet playing across the region. Two international pianists, Murray McLachlan & Kathryn Page, will be offering duet masterclasses in the David Turnbull Music School and will also give a Piano Duet Recital in the Bushell Hall.

The BBC Magazine wrote, “Murray McLachlan is a pianist with a virtuoso technique and a sure sense of line. His timing and phrasing are impeccable, and his tone – full but unforced in the powerful passages, gentle and restrained in the more lyrical – is a perpetual delight.” Since making his professional debut, Murray McLachlan has consistently received outstanding critical acclaim. Recordings of contemporary music have won numerous accolades, including full star ratings, as well as ‘rosette’ and ‘key recording’ status in the Penguin Guide to CDs, and ‘Disc of the month’ and ‘Record of the month ‘in ‘Music on the Web’ and ‘The Herald’. McLachlan teaches at the Royal Northern College of Music and at Chetham’s School of Music.Kathryn Page has given over 20 recitals at the South Bank and Wigmore Hall, both as soloist and chamber music pianist. She has toured Norway, Italy, Ireland and Australia where she gave seven recitals at the Sydney Festival and broadcast for ABC. At home Kathryn has performed at many of the leading music festivals and has given numerous live broadcasts for BBC Radio. She has worked with many established artists including David Campbell, John Lenehan, Joanna MacGregor and Sting.

Pupils of all levels can perform a duet or even a six-hands piece. Teachers are also welcome to play with their pupils. Adult pupils are welcome too. All participating duets will be invited to perform in the 10:30am concert in the Bushell Hall and to take part in one of the masterclasses in the afternoon. A similar event took place in 2018 and due to many requests for it to be repeated, a similar event is now taking place in March. It promises to be a wonderful day, proving piano playing does not need to be a lonely affair.
